This year Knocklyon 112th will celebrate its 40th year in existence. It has grown from being a handful of perspective scouts and parents meeting in a classroom to where it is now. It is the one of the largest scout groups in Ireland boasting over 300 youth members and an amazing team of over 80 adult volunteers.
To celebrate, we have a number of brilliant events to mark the occasion. Group Camp, Annual BBQ, A Black Tie Ball and first on the list – The 4 Peaks Challenge. This entails climbing the highest mountain in each province in Ireland over three days. This is how it will work:
Thursday 17th March: We will climb Slieve Donard (highest mountain in Ulster) and Lugnaquilla (highest mountain in Leinster) followed by an overnight in Knocklyon
Friday 18th March: We will climb Mweelrea (highest mountain in Connacht) followed by an overnight in Galway
Saturday 19th March: We will climb Carrauntoohil (highest mountain in Munster & Ireland) followed by an overnight in Kerry.
We are looking for three types of volunteers to make this challenge happen. Places are limited to 40 (20 climbers and 20 support). Sponsorship for those wishing to take part is at least but not limited to:
Adult climbers – €150
Youth climbers – €60
Support team – €50
Youth members wishing to take part must be experienced mountaineers.
A support team is required to help with logistics, transport, food, accommodation etc.
Deadline for registration is Friday 27th November. You can register your interest via our Facebook page or by return email to this address. Please state in the reply whether you want to be part of the climbing team or the support team.
