Scouting is divided into several sections for different age groups, which are as follows:
- Beavers (6-8-year-olds)
- Cubs (9-11-year-olds)
- Scouts (12-15-year-olds)
- Venturers (15-17-year-olds)
- Rovers (18-20-year-olds)
All sections meet up on their designated night once a week for an hour and a half in the den.
Beavers, Cubs and Scouts go on an outdoor activity every four weeks. Venturers and Rovers follow a less regular schedule.
Beaver Scouts is where many children begin their scouting journey; Beavers are 6-9 years of age.
The emphasis at Beavers is on having fun and adventure, while also starting to build scouting skills. At 112th Knocklyon, we have approximately 100 beavers across our 3 Beaver nights (Monday, Thursday and Friday). We meet at the Den once a week and generally have a weekend activity every 4 to 6 weeks. We also have a number of slumber nights through the year and finish the year with an overnight camp.
Cub Scouts is the second of five scouting sections (Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts, Venture Scouts and Rover Scouts). The cub are typically in the age range of 9-12 years. Cub Scouts follow the ONE programme for Scouting, which facilitates personal development using the scout method.
The cub packs (currently three in our group) meet weekly between the months of September and July in the Den and / or outdoors in the warmer months.
As well as the weekly meeting, Cub Scouts typically have a monthly outdoors event or activity. The Cub Scouts have an annual camp of three nights or four days over a summer bank holiday weekend. All Cub Scouts are encouraged to take part in all events to fully enjoy the “out” in Scouting.
Scouts are usually between 12 to 15 years of age. Scouts get to do more for themselves and have more of their own adventures that they get to choose. Scouting started out of the Scout section so it stands to reason that we have some serious fun in Scouts.
As well as the weekly meeting, Scouts typically have some sort of hostel or camp every month and a 12 day summer camp at the end of the scouting year.
Venture Scouts range from 16 to 18 years of age. The program involves a wide variety of exciting and adventurous activities, where the Venture Scouts themselves are responsible for designing, planning and implementing their activities. In doing this they are supported and advised by a dedicated team of Venture Scouters, whose role is to guide and mentor the Venture Scouts as they develop their skills in planning and organisation.
Rovers is a continuation of Venturers for ages 18, 19 & 20. It’s more than just a social club though. For many, school is over and real life is about to begin, some are already in the thick of it. College, jobs, money and relationships are all a part of life. This is the time of life when we need to build our experiences, make our mistakes and enjoy life.
We create and participate in community, county and national events as well as exploring the world and some of its greatest mountain ranges.
